Streszczenie The act of comparing normative aspirations of Poles to democracy with the course of the transformation process, emphasises contradictions and paradoxes associated with the transformation of a political system. The basis of these antinomies is comprised of the thesis of restrained institutional development that has its consequences in maintaining the gap between the citizen and the state – expressed both by individualistic atomisation and formation of concealed mechanisms supporting particular interests. On the contrary to the first statement, the second argument points out the lack of capability to analyze the Polish transformation in the context of global changes. The current crisis may lead to the conclusion that it is the end of the last century when symptoms of violation of stabilised, fundamental variations of capitalism - in terms of doctrinal and practical forms - were exposed. Thirdly - and perhaps most importantly – as it has occurred, even more often Poles are exposed to new ways of forming the social relations that result in an inability to reach the balance between the interests of particular social groups.
