ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ACROSS THE INFORMATIONAL LANDSCAPES OF THE USA, CHINA, AND CANADA

Streszczenie Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly constitutes a significant element of media discourse, which is a natural consequence of civilizational progress. Media outlets individually construct informational landscapes by emphasizing specific issues and refining them with selected sets of attributes, which often go beyond the technological aspect alone. The attribution of the issue of artificial intelligence can be further characterized in the context of politics, law, economics, culture, or society. The aim of this article is to illustrate the structure of the coverage of artificial intelligence by three news outlets in the United States (CNN), China (The People’s Daily), and Canada (CBC). The choice of these media is driven by two main factors: the position of the country as a leader in the development and regulation of AI, and the popularity of the respective general news outlet in each country. The foundation of the research process in this regard is not merely to present the general nature of communication about AI, but to verify the manner in which information about this field is constructed. The research clearly indicates significant differences in the informational landscapes created and maintained by the American, Chinese, and Canadian editorial offices, which differ not only in the topics or issues used, but also in their shift towards more political, legal, or social areas. The techniques employed in the study allowed for the positioning of CNN as a medium that conveys information about artificial intelligence in a non-homogeneous manner. On the other hand, the Chinese medium (The People’s Daily) clearly focuses its materials on issues and attributes related to technology and the economy. CBC concentrates more on the technological context, which may suggest a more generalized approach to the topics related to AI.
