QUALITY OF LIFE IN RURAL AREAS – PERCEPTION, ASPIRATIONS AND CONTEXT

Abstract The author is presenting a review of the research on quality of life in rural areas. The paper outlines various concepts and approaches to quality of life, emphasizing also the global context. In the research, respondents were prioritising three spheres of enablers of quality of life: personal, socio-economic and ecological. According to research outcomes the green environment was ranked highest pre-ceding all three components of personal sphere: healthcare, education and housing and utilities. Socio-economic enablers were ranked lower with the consumption being the lowest one. The importance of local strategic approach presented in the conclusion emphasizes the interdependence of local initiatives and global challenges that effect quality of life.
