Abstract The subject of article focuses on the ethical role of the media in creating a threat to public health. The discussion attempts to answer the question of how the media and broadly understood mass communication while performing several pro-social functions, can pose a risk to public health. I emphasize the subjective perpetration of broadcasters using the media and the role of their recipients' communicative competencies. I try to express the selected ethical dilemmas emerging in the indicated relationships with a metaphor linking the features of shamanism with the contemporary challenges of mass communication. Features of shamanism can be found in the reports of senders and recipients of media messages in terms of the language used and the attitudes adopted. The discussed problems are interesting in the context of the development of social media (Web 2.0) and the progressive democratization of the media, as a result of which the positive dimensions of the ongoing changes bring new challenges, reflected in the field of public health.
