Abstract The paper analyses web crowdfunding as an alternative capital raising method. The focus is on one model, namely community shares offers, discussed against the background of the crowdfunding nature, globally generated value and various business models used, with community enterprises – recipients of such campaigns – also highlighted. The paper presents an overview of publications, including authorial studies (of the local British communities) and by means of verifying a number of hypotheses, it probes into how enterprises representing the category referred to in the title benefit from the crowdfunding-based offers.
