Abstract In the context of the contemporary postmodern consumer societies, the era of virtual technologies in he globalising world, the author raises the question of the European university. The European university is seen as a product of the medieval culture (Christianitas), integrally embedded in the civilisation of the Latin Western Europe. The author postulates perceiving the university as a possible renewal (Renaissance) of the civilisational functions. This because of the institutionalised and selfless efforts, in its structure, to find the truth – to discover things hidden by the nature concerning the reality of the world (in the sense of the Greek physis) and the man
