Abstract The article aims at clarifying semantic and functional differences between change and transformation as seen within the cultural context. Attention is focused on processes of change/transformation brought about by the digital technologies. The social change caused by these technologies is frequently being explained via new paradigms, notably theories of information and network society. In the Author’s view, limiting this explanation to these theories, or concentrating only on them, is a weakness of the newest theories referring to change, transformation, social development etc..The author’s point is that the more change and transformation takes place the bigger and more urgent is the need of registering, collecting and interpreting the rising volume of data in all spheres: social, economic, ecological, technological and others.
