Abstract This text is about contemporary forms of response to disturbing and unexpected events, which often trigger mythical thinking familiar to us in the twenty-first century. The author analyses submitted comments, text and images emerged in conjunction with the abdication of the Pope; the height at which the Tu-154 crashed into the already famous birch tree at Smolensk and the asteroid passage and the meteor shower over Chelyabinsk (February 2013). The article is also an opportunity to trace the transformation taking place in the selected genres of folklore - those expressing a group worldview - tale and urban legend. Considerations shall be given to their poetics and features.
