Abstract There are two approaches to the development of education. One relies mostly on postulates, hopes, even utopias. The second – more realistic – is based on trends’ analysis and on human proactivity. Models of educational discourse are connected with our mindsets and our Weltanschauung and last but not least with a real setting in which we live and which determines our abilities to act. Such models vary in reference to the civilizational and cultural potentialities of a society. There are many factors, conditions and circumstances constituting new contexts for the development of education. To name a few: risky technologies, complexity and chaotics, commercialization, overwhelming pop-culture, mcDonaldization of societies, information flood, e-development and eexclusion. Are education and educators able to co-create some developmental alternatives for civilization and humanity?
