Abstract The main aim of this article is to analyse dimensions of innovation in enterprises from a sociological perspective. In the theoretical part the author proposed five dimensions of analysis for innovation in enterprises: theoretical, organizational, regional, institutional and cultural. In the empirical part the results of qualitative research conducted in the province of Silesia will be discussed. Analyses included the division into economic sectors such as agriculture and mining, manufacturing and services. Based on 60 in-depth interviews between entrepreneurs the author pointed out the main differences in the functioning of innovation in enterprises of various types. The qualitative approach to research on innovation in the industrial region, allowed for a study of an entrepreneur`s opinions about human capital, the use of innovation, institutional cooperation, with particular emphasis on scientific cooperation. One of the main barriers in the application of innovation is very poor cooperation with the world of science.
