Abstract The aim of the presented article is a metatheoretical reflection on non-violent communication. The author presents the specifics of non-violent communication and the ways of understanding it, and draws attention to the possibilities of influencing through the use of the language of the heart. The rhetoric of empathy is treated as a real counterbalance to the rhetoric of hatred and the civilization of argument. Empathy is treated as a competence positively influencing social relations, reducing stereotypical perception, conducive to tolerance and acceptance of differences. The author believes that sensitivity to others resulting from empathy promotes better communication and improves the quality of social relations. In the article, empathy is treated as a learnable competence, both through modeling and specific institutional activities.
