Socio-Demographic Determinants of Students’ Engagement in Learning

Abstract The article presents an analysis of the significance of factors influencing the psychosocial functioning of students during their studies. It provides both cognitive and practical guidelines for investing in resources necessary for effective student engagement in learning, leading to personal success and, subsequently, to satisfying professional careers. The study group consisted of 1,210 students of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The research was conducted using a method analysing key areas of university functioning—namely, an assessment of the socio-organisational factors of the academic environment (an original research tool). The results indicate that gender, age and form of residence differentiate students’ functioning and learning at the university. Students in the earlier years of study assessed their psychosocial functioning more positively than older cohorts. Significantly higher outcomes were achieved by students engaged in additional activities compared to those who were not involved. At the same time, a greater workload and fast pace of study may weaken students’ sense of engagement in academic activity.
