Abstract This article deals with international space law and the need to update existing law due to rapidly developing technology and space exploration by states and individuals. The lack of authority of space law is increasingly discussed and its legitimacy is questioned. Space treaties dating back to the Seventies today seem not to fulfill their role, and do not support space operators with the legal certainty. Hence, the question that arises is whether space law today is reality, or is utopia, whether it should be replaced either by so-called soft law provisions or should not be subject to any regulation at all, or should be provided by internal space law.
