Abstract Moral motivation has regulated people's behaviour since the beginning of time, and the feeling of shame is one of the oldest forms of moral reprimand. Showing sympathy, shame and jealousy is sociological in nature. The subject of this article is polemics on the issues of sympathy, jealousy and reflection on shame based on the views of Adam Smith, Charles Darwin, Thomas Scheff and Theodor Kemper.
