Abstract Regionalism plays a very important role in the political life of Spain, as evidenced by the name "Estado de las autonomias", which means "state of autonomous regions." The regions of Spain have extensive autonomous powers, they are also called "autonomous communities". They are diverse in terms of culture, language and history. The main factors that contributed to contemporary Spanish regionalism include history, geography and economics. An example of a region that meets all the conditions for the emergence of strong regionalism is Catalonia, whose cultural and administrative center is Barcelona. This region possesses distinctive historical, cultural, linguistic, economic, political, administrative and geographical features. Catalonia has maintained a high level of industrialization since the 19th century, it is one of the richest and at the same time one of the most expensive regions in Spain. For modern Catalan society, it is very important to feel a strong cultural identity that gives strength to the fight for independence, as well as pride in maintaining separation from the Spanish state. Recent political events have shown that the solidarity of Catalans in their desire to secede from Spain is very strong, but the permission of the Spanish authorities is limited to the possible increase in the autonomy of this area.
