Abstract The problem of socio-economic development is one of the most important issues of the contemporary world. The article defines basic concepts relating to the socioeconomic development, indicates directions taken by of social change as societies through specific phases of development-from agricultural society (role-based economy) via industrial society (industrial-based economy) to the post-industrial, consumptionoriented society (consumption-based economy). The study pays attention to the latter phase and emphasizes importance of consumption in the changes of the modern world (society); aiming to characterize the latter type of society and the consumption it undertakes. The article it indicates that consumption process causes social inequalities. It stresses the negative consequences of excessive consumption, threatening devastation of the natural resources of the Earth. In this context the article highlights the importance of sustainable consumption in the sustainable development of socio-economy. Consumption, in fact, is one of the most important factors affecting development in today's world. The article aims to show that it is very important for humankind to establish, as well as place liminations upon, the direction of the socio-economic development, because the side effect of development must not be the degradation of natural resources nature. Development processes must not destroy man but must improve him.
