Abstract The automation of work it is not a new economic or social problem. The roots of this date back to the beginning of the industrial era to the luddite movement and then to the 60s and 70s of the XX century when first computers and robots started to perform the human job. Nowadays we are witnessing another wave of automation of physical work. To better understand what is really happening we should fathom how to examine the problem under issue. This paper shows the most important ways of measuring the level of the automation of physical work and discusses the prospective social and economic consequences of this problem.
