Abstract In recent years we can observe the changes taking place in Western European party systems. The growing popularity of such politicians as Marine Le Pen, Victor Orban, Nigel Farage, Geert Wilders and others change the balance of power on the political scene. Electoral success of populists parties and movements needs clarification. In article author suggest that changes which we can observe are the result of changes in social cleavages. Author suggest that we can use the Rokkan models of social cleavages to explain current changes in party systems. The article presents thesis that the latest trends in the electoral process in Western Europe and USA are the result of the process which can be defined as “second wave of counter-mobilization”. This phenomenon is a response to post-national and post-industrial revolution which are the part of the transition from modern society to information society.
