Abstract The Free and Open Source Software community has been successful on the software market for more than 20 years. Open Source products are competing with proprietary software, being recognized as a selected software markets leaders. This phenomenon is questioning the traditional meaning of the property and our perception of the social production value. The genesis of the social software development” was an exceptional combination of location, time and state of information technology. The following paper emphasizes the unique work culture of the government founded US laboratories and software innovations underpinning the creation of the open source community. Open Source Software literature review includes open projects’ development process, motivation of contributors as well as principles and practices of the open source licenses.
