Abstract Society 5.0 is a concept originating in Japan, which proposes to solve social problems through the development of digital technologies. The article deconstructs the concept’s theses, looking at it as a political, strategic and development paradigm, as well as innovation management policy and essentially – a deep social change. The agenda of Society 5.0 is analyzed through the theoretical framework of interdisciplinary Science and Technology Studies. Society 5.0 is said to herald modern social reconstruction, however by pinning its hopes on technological innovation it reveals its non-modern roots, the Enlightenment thought. Society 5.0 is gaining international popularity, increasing the chance that this Japanese vision of technocratic order will actually be realized. The analysis of academic literature and digital industry’s papers presented in the article indicates that society 5.0 is being adopted without much thought: the limitations and risks behind the concept are not recognized.
