Abstract The aim of this article is to characterize and compare metropolitan man-agement and the management of dispersed local government units located within a metropolitan area. The authors present the essence of local government management, the specifics of managing local government units located in metropolitan areas and point to the need to professionalize their management. Furthermore, they present the essence of metropolitan governance, pro- and quasi-metropolitan initiatives and solutions, and point to the advantages of metropolitan governance. The authors ad-vocate for the creation of metropolises and metropolitan management.
