Abstract This article aims to highlight the specific features and role of local government units (at the municipal, district and voivodeship levels) in the processes of managing local and regional development. The primary research methods employed in this study included content analysis and institutional-legal analysis. As the fun-damental form of decentralised public administration, local self-government is responsible for meeting the needs of residents in key aspects of their functioning within the local or regional environment. The effectiveness of local government units largely depends on the quality of their management. At the same time, effective management is a key condition for achieving efficient and sustainable local and regional development.
